It takes some revolt to bring us together

now, a burglary, noise from without

we’ll stay beside one another on fitted sheets

and wonder at the way we’ve domesticated

so that we excuse ourselves to turn

once again, reaching for a light switch in the dark

and even if we wanted to touch, it would be harder

than touching a stranger on a train

and who can blame us for reaching out here and there

across a desk or sofa to touch a hem or let a hem be touched?
